The passion project of jazz trumpeter Sarah Uyar, Iris is a Connecticut-based jazz quartet that performs post-bop, avant-garde, and modern jazz in a chordless style. Iris includes tenor saxophonist Wesley Lewis, bassist Christie Echols, and drummer McCoy Plaisted. The absence of a chordal instrument such as piano or guitar breeds greater harmonic interpretation by the performers and isn’t as structured as more typical orientations of jazz combos. Iris is the premiere jazz group in Connecticut that primarily features femme and queer musicians. Modeled after Joshua Redman’s Still Dreaming and Christian Mcbride’s New Jawn, Iris strives to continue innovating the sound of the chordless quartet whilst honoring the tradition of the music. Iris has an eclectic palate that provides for interesting and engaging live performances and is a powerhouse of creativity, passion, and intensity.
